voyage dans la lune

Listening to: Air's Le Voyage dans la Lune

Reading: Thomas Mann

Somewhat obsessed with candle jars.

My hair has finally reached the length required to wear a top knot once again (I am still surprised by how much I had missed this!), which inspired me to create a new, themed tumblr in homage to the bun/chignon. For some reason, this particular style feels far more like 'me', regardless the curious self induced pressure to wear it loose. I wonder why we feel such contradictory urges?

I love A Death in Venice! I love the look of the top knot but I can never do it so I feel satisfied with it :( I think my hair is just too layered for the look or too straight? I guess I'm just a hair down type of girl!

I always wanted to wear my hair long and straight, but the 'atmospheric' texture (and soft curls) have never helped me to realize it. But for so many years I have struggled to do it anyway, collecting split ends and breakage in the process. I guess we always want what we cannot have! Still my hair straightens easily, but is difficult to maintain when worn long and loose, especially when there is humidity.

It's funny, because what feels effortless and low maintenance to one person may turn out to be very difficult for the other!

Such pretty photos! I've loved Air for ages, but for some reason stopping following after the last album. I'm thinking I should seek their new album out? :) I love the album artwork! x

Valerie, you should definitely give it a try! This one reminds me of why I had initially fallen for their music so many years ago. There's less of the usual pop element here, mostly instrumental, mysterious and otherworldly........it has a really timeless appeal.

Ahaha, I love your themed tumblrs. I wonder what the next one would be? Maybe one for nice perfume packaging or CDG cardigans? Haha!

If you are really into straight hair, then you might consider getting a straight perm, which is like a perm only it makes your hair straight instead of curly. I get it done once every two years or so to kind of de-tangle my hair if I've been treating it very badly (I went about 2 years using nothing but soap on my hair which made it a very tangly mess). It's like taking a straightening iron to your hair but having the effect last until your hair grows out!

I love Air...

Re the hair. Mine is long and curly and although I kind of like the way it looks down (when it does what I want it to), on the rare days that I actually wear it down - by the end of the day I have scraped it back into a messy bun anyway.

Thanks for the hair tips! I had been wondering about the Keratin treatment, then heard that it contained formaldehyde......almost everything has failed me recently, apart from a cream treatment by Kiehls. I do feel more comfortable with it tied up though. It makes me look two inches taller, haha!

I know what you mean by contradictory urges. I feel more 'me' with my hair in a top knot but I always feel strangely guilty when I wear it this way. This is probably because I know that my boyfriend prefers it when i wear it down. But to me my hair never looks right when I wear it down and I don't want to have to straighten it every day and ruin it as I have in the past. I absolutely love the tumblr. Oh, and happy belated birthday! xxx

Hana, I know what you mean. There is certainly some sort of vague pressure to let it all hang down........I was actually reading an online debate last week regarding boyfriends and our hair! The unanimous vote was obvious, yet in my own experience nobody has ever expressed a preference. My long term partner (now ex) insisted on not having a preference at all, which I suppose is a good thing! Mine is relatively ok worn loose, but it is difficult to keep smooth because the cuticle - by nature- doesn't lie flat. Long and curly sounds terribly difficult to me, and I began to straighten it when I left school, so can't even recall wearing it this way. As a child I always wore long braids, and when they were released I resembled a small cloud.

Fleurette - I am still tempted to create more! Must learn how to stop...

Ohh, that sailor collar is a dream! <3 I remember when I was first able to topknot my hair! Now I'm frightened of cutting it - as it's my go-to hairstyle!

no idea! I just got a haircut this weekend and now never want to wear my hair down because i feel like having my hair up would be much nicer than the haircut i wanted so badly and finally got :/

good thing that my hair is getting longer at the same time too. are you going to cut your hair or let it grow out?

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJoy

Jo, they still have the sailor top at sale price, it is so lovely!

Alice, your hair would look beautiful at any length, so thick and glossy! I have recently chopped a few inches from the front of my hair, just to frame the face, and I HATE it now. I am currently in the topknot with full face showing and not remotely comfortable. Still, I have to tell myself it will even out eventually, and I really love the growing out stage....sometimes.

Joy, I have decided to let it grow. I tried to make it healthier looking by cutting it short and the condition has not improved, regardless how well I care for it. I think it is simply the nature of my hair to turn poofy and frizzy, so I am going to have to work with it instead of against it - and longer hair weighs the curls down a little more, so no more excuses to keep the bob.

No products, even those with 100% reviews (yeh, you Kerastase elixir!) have helped at all, apart from Kiehls straightening cream. And even that only goes so far.....

Your candle jars are so beautiful, where did you buy them ? :)

Elodie, they were from a local store, a sort of non-brand (for $1 each!). :)
